GLOBAL AND NATIONAL UNIONS NOT DOING ENOUGH TO PROMOTE THE YOUTH

12th August is International Youth day. The youth the world over celebrate this day. The them for this year is “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a sustainable World. Hotel Food Processing and Catering Workers celebrated this day at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre Malawi.

Speaking during the event Tamanda Malinki said the theme is a welcome move as most youth do not have skills for a sustainable future. The world is talking about green economy and the youth are the critical players in that economy. this is why it is important to empower the youth with relevant skills that will make the economy possible.  She said there are no proper structures to facilitate the involvement of the youth. Tamanda Malinki said even the Global and National unions are not funding youth activities – they fund women activities but not youth activities.

Speaking at the same event Kelvin Chifunda the president of Hotel Food Processing and Catering Workers union called on the youth not to used by political leaders. The president said the youth should be assisted to acquire skills. Skills that will have a sustainability.  The Government should have a special fund that can assist the youth to acquire green skills

The former president Harvey Chingondo called on the participant to embrace green tourism. How do we dispose off the things the hotels use like water bottles and lotion bottles.
