The women in Dwangwa with the help from IUF women project have helped sensitize the masses to fight gender based violence.
During the month of January 2023 to July 2023 there were four cases of suicide
Many families in Dwangwa were going through problems in their marriages.
“We engaged the people in Dwangwa and sensitized them on the dangers of mental health” said the secretary of women branch of Sugar Plantation and Allied Workers Union (SPAWUM). She said most women were being victimized by their husbands. The men could leave their wives with no food.
SPAWUM women committee did an investigation and found that most women were not being allowed to work or do business.
The worst case was when he man left a woman for another woman. When the man came back the woman locked the door of their house and sprayed the room with petrol and set house on fire. When they went to the hospital they badly burnt and all died while in hospital.
SPAWUM women have since engaged the families and told men not to stop their wives from securing work or doing business.
Since that meeting in July no new case has been reported.
